Hugh de Payen was a vassal (subject) of Hugh de Champagne and a relative by marriage to the St Clairs of Roslin; Andre de Montbard, the uncle of Bernard of Clairvaux and another vassal of Hugh de Champagne; Geoffroi de St Omer, a son of Hugh de St Omer; Payen de Montdidier, a relative of the ruling family of Flanders; Achambaud de St-Amand, another relative of the ruling house of Flanders. Gondemar and Rosal were Cistercian monks who were now just transferring their allegiance. Hugh de Payen was the first grand master of the Poor Knights of Christ.
The Templar Order was founded as the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon in 1118. They were a religious and military order ostensibly established for the protection of pilgrims to the Holy Land, during the Second Crusade. The order quickly became powerful and wealthy, but the arrogance of its members, showed towards rulers, together with their wealth and rivalry with the Knights Hospitaller, led to their downfall in 1312 with many of its possessions being given to the Knights Hospitaller.
Bernard of Clairvaux played a vital role in the formation of the Templars and had blood-ties to some of the first Templar Knights, in particular Andre de Montbard, who was his maternal uncle. He may also have been related to the Counts of Champagne, who themselves appear to have been pivotal in its formation. Bernard wrote the first rules of the Templar Order.
